The Most Memorable Moments of the 2005-2006 CYO Basketball Season

St. Andrews going 12-2:

Going into the season, nobody could have predicted what would become of this team from Newtown, all juniors. They wheeled off an incredible 12-2 campaign to shock most of the CYO world. They utterly dominated most of the competition during the regular season, and especially during the playoffs.

Holy Trinity having battles with their coaches on the website:

What looked like a very hopeful start to the Morrisville faithful ended in bitter disappointment. Things seemed to be sailing smoothly for the team until this site surfaced. Then constant message board threads referring to the head coach, Terry Blisko, seemed to slowly tear the team apart.

St. Ephrems buzzer beater to get into the title game:

At Grace, Ephrems, literally seconds away from being upset by Holy Trinity, sucked it up and let their senior abilities take over. As the final 10 seconds were rolling off the clock, and with about 95% of the crowd against them, senior PG Chris Dolan took a strong lay up all the way to the rim as it finally rolled in after an eternity of laying on the rim as time expired to put them into the championship game.

St. Andrews beating of St Thomas in the Final 4, winning by 50:

Although this was not a close game at all, it was quite memorable in the way that there was the birth of the CEC student section. The Grace gym quickly filled as the countless members of the section filed into the builiding carrying all types of towels and noodles and such. Nick de Luca put on a show for the ages, nettign 25 points in the first half alone as Newtown rejoiced a huge victory over the lowly Titans.

JP Dowling scoring 38 points in the quarterfinals:

Even if the Knights came up just literally an inch and an extra step short (Stumpf did travel on that winning lay up), he ended his CYO career with a game to remember. With the game a dogfight all the way through, and Domzalski and Carroll both struglling, Dowling picked up the whole Knights squad and placed them on his back. Ending the night with a game high 38 points, if it wasn't for him, this game would have been over in the first half, but instead it turned into possibly the best overall game of the year.

St. Thomas unbelieveable play with 2 seconds left to beat St. Charles at the buzzer in the quarterfinals:

Sticking to the same game, it was up and down the whole way, and with the game hanging in the balance and Thomas looking shaky and the waning minutes passed, with about 3 seconds left, Sean Ropars heaved a deep ball the length of the court, making the catch was Mike Stumpf who then shot a lay up over a Charles defender at the buzzer for the incredible finish. That lay up to this day is still the most controversial basket in CYO.

The CEC student section causing pure mayhem in the playoffs:

If you just take a second and think about it: what if this student section would have never assembled? St. Thomas sure would have liked that I'm sure. To think if not for the student section, Thomas could of possibly beaten St. Andrews. And who could forget the championship game? I'm sure anyone on the St. Ephrems roster couldn't. To think the championship could have ended up in either Bensalem or Croydon rather than Newtown. Funny how much a foghorn and some party favors could make so much history.

St. Andrews going into double ot with Igantius Crimson in the 2nd round and pulling it out:

In Newtown, their own friendly grounds, Andrews found themselves in a dogfight in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Ignatius had a lot of momentum coming off of an upset win in the first round over home favorites, the Grace Gators, with under a minute to go though, Ignatius squandered their lead and Andrews forced overtime. After the first overtime things were still even so it wasn't until the 2nd overtime period until Chris Madison rallied his troops and delivered yet another crucial win to Newtown.

St. Charles beating St. Andrews to break up the perfect regular season:

After Andrews found their way to a 9-0 start to the regular season, ego's started to grow, both on the court and on the message boards. This angered just about every team in the league, so mustering up all they had, the St. Charles Knights put an end to Andrew's perfection. Led by their usual trio of Carroll, Domzalski, and Dowling, and with the guidance of big man on campus, Drew Carroll, the Knights delivered a parade like victory to the heart of Bensalem.

St. Mikes upsetting St. Thomas in the regular season:

With their backs against the wall early in the season, the St. Mikes Leprachauns knew they had to start winning some games to at least have a chance at the postseason. Already beginning their season on a very disappointing note (1-3), they used the homecourt advantage and took it to the Titans. Leading throughout most of the game, it eventually came do to a, if you can believe it, 5 foot jump shot by none other than Mr. Season Ticket man himself Bill Scott. He missed and the Leprachauns had their biggest win of the season.

St. Charles blowing a 9 point lead in the last minute to 4-10 Cabrini:

Even if it was early in the season, this was the biggest upset the league had seen. The Knights entered this game totally overlooking the Cardinals. And for that, Bill Taylor and John Chapman would surely make them pay, they played the game of their season that night, eventually leaving a lasting impression on the Cardinal faithful. Unfortunately, they went on to lost 9 of thier last 10 games after that.
