All-CYO Teams

Based On Regular Season

1st Team

Head Coach-Joe Malone (St. Marks White) This guy totally resurrected a dead St. Marks basketball program. He took his team to the playoffs via a 9-5 regular season record, and they advanced past the 1st round. He proved that he could silence the potential critics and take a team deep into the playoffs.

PG-John Malloy (Cabrini White) This kid had the ability to single handedly take over a game, as he did several times throughout the season. He hurt you from any offensive standpoint: shooting, driving, passing, fast breaks. He did a bit of everything; he also led his team into the playoffs. Although, not the conventional pass-first point guard, he still gets my vote for 1st team.

SG-Nick DeLuca (Andrews White) Although he's not exactly a pure shooting guard, his versatility allowed him to play just about any spot on the floor. He is a great leader for his team, can shoot the 3 ball as well. But, his biggest asset has to be his court vision; he has the ability to find the open man at just about any time. Even though he is a hated player by opposing teams, their 12-2 record almost demands you to respect them.

SF-Jake Freschetti (Ignatius Red) Most well rounded player in the league, offensively and defensively. Led his team in scoring, and also to a 10-4 record, good for the 5th seed in the playoffs. Proved his toughness by participating in playoffs, even with a case of mono. He can drive the lane with the best of em’, and also has the ability to control the offensive glass when he wants to. Makes the players around him play to their best ability.

PF-Jim Domzalski (Charles Gold) When not in foul trouble, he can control the tempo of the whole game, teams sometimes have to draw up game plans just to stop this horse on the boards. By far Drew Carroll’s best player on this Knights team. His aggressive style of play is sometimes what hurt him with foul trouble, but it also helped him become one of the most dominant players in the league.

C-Rob Banning (Ephrems Blue) Not exactly the most potent pure offensive talent, but he sure can get it done on the defensive end of the floor. Also is a big time rebounder, of course being about 6’5 doesn’t quite hurt that. He’s a big reason why Ephrems has a 13-1 record and was the #1 seed for the playoffs. Provides a great source of senior leadership.

2nd Team

Head Coach-Mike Christman (Ephrems Blue) Some would say that you don’t even need a coach to win with the team he’s got. But, that’s never really the correct case. Every great team has a great coach behind it all. He’s one of those guys whose not finesse, he just goes out, tells his guys what he wants done and they just get the job done for him, he’s a great example of a player’s coach.

PG-Alex Cherry (Marks White) Great all around point guard, what you look for in a leader. By far the biggest acquisition of St. Marks over the break last season. Great at drawing fouls and getting to the line. Likes to get everyone get involved on the offensive end. Solid defender as a point guard, one of the most reliable and consistent players in the league.

SG-Kevin Papparella (Andrews Blue) Although he suffered a horrific playoff outing against Marks, this is based on a player’s performance throughout the regular season. And throughout the season he led his team to a 9-5 record and a playoff birth. Although most would argue that he is only a one dimensional offensive threat, he’s one of the best at what he does, he can chuck at that 3 ball nonstop. And when he catchs fire watch out.

SF-Vince DiToronto (Ephrems Blue) He’s not one of those players that talks a lot of trash on the court, he lets his playing do the talking. He is one of the main reasons why his Ephrems team is favored to win the championship. He has the ability to kill you with the 3, the mid range, and can occasionally drive it to the basket. Not afraid to get his nose dirty by grabbing some boards. Just one of those guys which any coach would love to have on his team.

PF-Brendan Foley (Mikes Green) Even though he got off to a rocky start, he picked up his game and finally hit his strides in the middle of the season. He was most effective on the offensive glass; occasionally he can hurt you from the perimeter as well. His one fault is his lack of defensive intensity. But, he makes up for that with his offensive capabilities, he wasn’t afraid to step into the leadership role in his 1st year with the team.

C-Steve Walsh (Mikes Gold) He has been labeled a bit of a ball hog, but quite frankly, Walsh is a scorer. Standing at about 6’4, it’s easy for him to grab offensive boards and to take it to the rim. His main fault is that he settles for the outside jumper too much. He can change the pace of a whole game and just take over, he proved this in their upset over the Grace Gators, a major inside presence.

Honorable Mention

Head Coach-Chris Madison (Andrews White) This guy just knows how to get the W and how to get the job done. He is good for drawing up that clutch play and how to maximize his strategies to get the absolute best out of his players. His roster doesn’t share the best raw talent but he got them to buy in to his style and they’ve enjoyed monster success throughout the year.

PG-Anthony Gorrel (Ignatius Crimson) Sometimes he may try to be a bit too flashy, but when he’s on top of  his game, he can simply take over. He ran the Ignatius Crimson offense nearly perfect as the season rolled on, thus giving them the shot at making the playoffs. Not the best jump shooter, but can prove to be clutch at times. Good at getting the ball inside to the basket, does what you need done.

SG- Mike Stumpf (Thomas) He got off to a great start this season, posting 32 points against Grace in their opener. And he has been Thomas’ leading scorer throughout the year. The only thing preventing this star from a 1st or 2nd team status is his recent attitude and behavioral problems. He was kicked out of Egan and his play has been shaky since. Plus, he lacks experience, since he is only a sophomore.

SF-Bobby Marozzi (Mikes Green) Most likely the most versatile player in the CYO league, plays and excels at any of the 5 spots on the floor. Can be deadly from the perimeter, and can get the foul line. Plays very aggressive, above average defender, one of those gritty guys who just knows how to play the game. Really a nice addition to any team.

PF-Vladamir Alaby (Trinity) Has been somewhat of a disappointment from an individual standpoint this year. But, for his team he has been indispensable. He runs the offense, even as a big guy. He has an above average jump shot; can rebound if he attempts to, also an above average leaper. Maybe one of the things holding him back is the fact that for most of the season his whole team has been in turmoil.

C- Rasuel Tyson Thomas (Marks White) Even if he missed a game or 2, and showed up late for several others, he did prove to be a pivotal player for Marks this year. He gave them the established inside presence that they needed. Coach Joe Malone is very happy about how Rasuel has played this year, and how he has seemed to gel with his teammates with no problems. The main thing he needs to work on is better shot selection.
